Saunders Cervical Traction Device
The Saunders Cervical Traction Device is an FDA-approved, non-surgical treatment option for patients experiencing neck pain. The device applies gentle traction to the neck, stretching the muscles and relieving pressure on the spine. In a study of 100 patients with chronic neck pain, 88% reported significant pain relief after using the Saunders Cervical Traction Device for just 20 minutes per day. What is cervical traction?
Cervical traction is a treatment for neck pain that involves engaging your neck in a light pull motion to help separate the bones (your cervical vertebrae). You might call this spinal traction. Your doctor can show you how to manually perform cervical traction or may use a cervical traction remedy at home. Regardless of which way it’s applied, cervical traction creates more space between vertebrae in your neck to reduce pressure and tension. It’s used to treat issues like pain from various conditions and ailments.
Cervical traction can be used to treat temporary conditions, including:- Radiculopathy or other pinched nerves.
- Neck sprains.
- Fractured spine.
Your physician may use cervical traction to treat longer-term problems that arise over time, including:- Spinal stenosis.
- Degenerative disk disease.
- Cervical spondylosis.
- Scoliosis.
Who invented Saunders Cervical Traction Device?
Duane Saunders has created an innovative cervical traction product that has benefitted many people for over thirty years. Saunders Cervical Traction is the sole work of a famous physical therapist named Saunders. He has been developing various traction devices for over 30 decades, and he has also written several books regarding back pain.
What happens before you use a Saunders cervical traction device?
Your medical provider will diagnose a problem or condition that cervical traction can effectively treat. You might need it after a severe injury (such as a fractured spine), or you may find it useful for the soreness of a long-term spinal column condition such as cervical stenosis. Before getting cervical traction, your attending physician will perform a complete physical exam to ensure you’re a good candidate for it.
What are the advantages of using a Saunders cervical traction device?
Cervical traction feels easy to perform, and typically, it works right away to offer pain relief. People who benefit from cervical traction typically notice an instant improvement in their neck pain after just a few treatments. Some of the most common benefits include reduced pain, decreased stiffness, and reduced muscle tension. Several studies have shown that in addition to stretches and physical therapy exercises, cervical traction can enhance your range of motion (how far you can swing your neck). However, this may not apply to everyone.

How should you use the Saunders Cervical Traction Unit?
Preparing for Saunders Neck Traction - Set it on top of a carpeted or flat surface. Check to ensure the bottom of the unit does not pinch the air hose. Make sure you have sufficient room to lie down comfortably.
- Separate the wedges by rotating one knob on each wedge so the Saunders Cervical Traction device's neck strap fits easily between the wedges. You may need to adjust the strap's settings after you lie down on the device. Note: Over-rotating adjustment knobs can cause serious damage to the internal gear.
- Loosen the adjustable head strap.
- Ensure the device is in the proper starting position - the headrest should be touching the base. If not, turn the thrust arms to the Release position.
- Use your health care provider's recommendation to set the traction profile by turning the angles on both sides of the Angle Adjuster, and then press until it locks into place.
- Position the pump where you can easily reach it during treatment.
- Set a timer for the length of treatment. You are ready to use the Saunders Cervical Traction device now.
Angle Adjuster Positions:- Top = 15 degrees
- Middle = 20 degrees
- Bottom = 25 degrees
Note: If your health care provider does not include the angle of measurement, keep the Angle Adjuster in its top position. Applying Traction with Saunders Cervical Home Traction Device - Lie on your back, positioning your body so the neck wedge cradles the middle of your neck or your preferred headstone and your head nestles on the headrest. The neck wedges should rest between the tips of your ears and your shoulders.
- Turn on the knobs on either of the adjusting poles until the front edges have firmly pressed against both sides of the neck.
- As you settle in this position, the neck blocks may occasionally self-adjust to accommodate your body's contour. You may also manually rotate the blocks as required to establish a stable fit.
- Secure a strap just above your brow line to keep your head back. The strap should fasten securely.
- Use the pump to apply traction.
How to clean Saunders Neck Traction Unit?
All surfaces should be cleaned with a light detergent or disinfectant, without submerging the unit in water. If the device changes hands, it is important to thoroughly disinfect all surfaces and to focus on those areas that come into direct contact with the body. It is recommended to always use a new headrest.
