Due to the fact that it seems like it would be useful for athletes, kinesio tape has gained popularity, especially in view of the Summer Olympics. Are those colorful strips of tape useful in avoiding or reducing injuries suffered by athletes? Can they help me, too?
Kinesio tape vs. regular athletic tape
The standard white athletic tape that athletes and trainers have used for decades is made from stiff cotton, which can stabilize or immobilize an injured body part. Kinesio tape, however, has elastic strands woven throughout the cotton, so the tape is stretchy and does not cause a loss of motion when it is applied.
Kinesio tape offers its wearers the adaptability to adjust their exercises according to their physical requirements, and many athletes claim that the tape helps promote muscle awareness. Additionally, some believe that this process can reduce the severity of muscle injury and promote blood flow to the muscle.
Kinesio tape manufacturers and health professionals offer taping suggestions to prevent or treat injuries such as the following:
- IT band injuries
- Shin splints
- Hamstring injuries
- Achilles tendonitis
- Plantar fasciitis
- Rotator cuff
- Tennis elbow
Frequently asked Questions
What do Kinesio Taping and Kinesio Tex Tape do?
- A technique called kinesiology taping was invented in the late 20th century by Dr. Kenzo Kase, founder and director of Kinesio. It creates therapeutic effects by optimally distributing pressure through carefully designed tapes and bandages. Subsequent decades of research and clinical validation have resulted in enhanced diagnosis and treatment options through the development of the techniques such as Kinesio taping recommended by Dr. Kase.
What benefits distinguish Kinesio Tex Tape from other tapes?
- 100% High-Grade Cotton – for comfort and air-permeability

How is the tape applied?
- The medical tape is applied over the affected area with the muscles in a stretched position without getting too technical. The pit is wedged at the origin of the muscle to provide support and at the insertion to the origin for rehabilitation.
What are some suggestions for optimum taping results?
- The skin should be free of oil, sweat, or lotion prior to application.
- After application, rub-down the tape to activate heat-sensitive glue.
- Avoid extreme stretching of the tape during application to avoid skin irritation.
- Apply approximately 1 hour prior to activity or shower to allow the glue to adhere properly. Skin irritation is extremely rare, but care should be taken with hypersensitive skin patients.
What is the difference between the colors?
- There's no significant difference between the colors. The colors were developed to serve as support for color therapy. The gray was created for visibility and black was created after numerous requests. Color choice is a matter of personal preference.
