Effective conservatively to align big toe, make shoes more comfortable
Unique splint controls toe alignment post-operatively to aid healing, or conservatively to make shoes comfortable and ease pressure on first MP joint. Hallux Valgus DaySplint combines an elasticized midfoot binder and toe sock to provide varus-valgus alignment control while permitting flexion and extension of the hallux. Its elastic strap adjusts to desired tension level. Recommended for use following surgical dressing removal. PediFix - Hallux Valgus DaySplint fits in most footwear and is easily removed and properly re-applied for bathing, therapy or inspection.
Directions
To custom fit the DaySplint, unbutton the toe strap from the arch bandage and open the bandage by releasing its Velcro fastener. Slide the bandage on snugly around the middle of foot and adjust it so the Velcro area is positioned on the bottom of foot and the side button faces the outside of foot. Slip the toe cap over big toe and position the oval foam pad directly over bunion. (Note: This foam pad is removable in case you find it uncomfortable.) Pull the strap down along inside of foot, directly through opening in the side of bandage. Then stretch strap around heel and up the outside of the foot. Select one of the button holes on the end of the strap and button the strap so it provides enough tension to comfortably straighten the big toe. If the Velcro fastener and/or the end of the toe strap are too long, carefully trim either with scissors.
Limit initial usage periods to 30 minutes each. Gradually wear splint for longer durations and increase band tension as comfort level improves. Conservative results will vary based on the severity and nature of the condition. Wearing the splint regularly can reduce discomfort and pain while possibly slowing the progression of bunion deformity. Post-operatively, this device can be worn with surgical dressings or after their removal to maintain idea MP alignment until healing is complete.
